Country ham rolls recalled as part of Johnston County Hams contamination
Ladyfingers Caterers, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, has issued a recall of its Signature Shaved Country Ham Rolls after one person reported becoming ill from the ham roll. The potential listeria contamination and recall of the ham rolls is a direct result of the neighboring Smithfield, North Carolina, Johnston County Hams recall. Ladyfingers rolls were made with the ham produced by Johnston County Hams, which was found to be potentially contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has been notifying food manufacturers of the potential listeria contamination. FSIS and Johnston County Hams notified Ladyfingers Caterers on October 3, 2018, that its ham produced from April 3, 2017, to October 3, 2018, may have been contaminated. Ladyfingers is now recalling all Signature Shaved Country Ham Rolls currently on the market.
Ladyfingers distributed the ham rolls, which bear the UPC 8 56149 00509 9, between April 3, 2017, through October 3, 2018, to retail stores in California, District of Columbia, Delaware, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Virginia.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
