Pistachios potentially contaminated with salmonella

Bazzini LLC, is recalling 4,000 pounds of pistachios, after routine sampling revealed that the nuts may be contaminated with salmonella. Bazzini, based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, had shipped the pistachios to retail stores and to customers via direct delivery and mail order in New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington DC, and Virginia. Nut production and shipments have been suspended as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigates the salmonella contamination.

Recalled nuts include:

  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Super Colossal Natural 5 Lbs Bag with UPC #0 75062 30701 5
  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Colossal Natural. 5 Pound Bag with UPC #0 75062 30711 4
  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Super Colossal Pistachios 25 Lb Bulk Box with UPC #0 75062 30700 8
  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Rams Head Natural 16 Oz Bag with UPC #0 75062 00536 2
  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Colossal Natural 16 Oz Bag with UPC #0 75062 00535 5

Recalled pistachios are packaged in red, white, and blue bags. Consumers who have purchased the potentially contaminated nuts should not eat them.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
