Raw beef illness count up to 120 in 22 states
Recalled raw beef products have now made 120 people ill, across 22 states, from food poisoning related to salmonella contamination. JBS Tolleson, Inc., based in Tolleson, Arizona, recalled close to 7 million pounds of raw beef products on October 4, 2018. The recalled beef products were produced and packaged from July 26, 2018, to September 7, 2018, and were shipped to retailers nationwide under many brand names.
As of October 23, 2018, the illness count increased to 120 people with illness start dates ranging from August 5, 2018, to September 28, 2018. Of those who have become ill, 33 have been hospitalized because of the severity of their symptoms. There have been no deaths reported.
Arizona (21), California (27), and Colorado (23) were the hardest hit by food poisoning cases. Other states impacted by the salmonella contamination include: Hawaii (1), Idaho (2), Iowa (1), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Kansas (1), Kentucky (1), Minnesota (1), Montana (5), New Mexico (1), Nevada (3), Ohio (2), Oklahoma (4), Oregon (1), South Dakota (6), Texas (2), Utah (9), Washington (3), and Wyoming (4).
The count may continue to increase as illnesses might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. In some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.
