Cow Pie pet food recalled for listeria potential
A fresh frozen meat product for dogs and cats has been recalled because it is potentially contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Columbia River Natural Pet Foods, based in Vancouver, Washington, is recalling 933 packages of Cow Pie dog and cat food. The packages had been distributed to retail stores and through direct delivery in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.
Potentially contaminated Cow Pie fresh frozen meat products can be dangerous for humans as well as for their dogs and cats. Food safety procedures apply to pet food handled by humans to avoid illness caused by the listeria. Humans should always wash their hands after having contact with pet food. Surfaces that came in contact with the Cow Pie pet food should also be thoroughly cleaned.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture discovered the potential for contamination after routine testing revealed the presence of listeria monocytogenes in one package. Recalled Cow Pie fresh frozen meat products were packaged in 2-pound purple and white plastic bags. Consumers who have these products in their homes should not feed the meat to their dogs or cats.
