FDA Investigates Jimmy John’s E. coli 0103 Outbreak FDA Information

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local partners, are investigating an outbreak of 14 illnesses caused by E. coli O103 in:

1. Iowa (3)
2. Illinois (6)
3. Missouri (1)
4. Texas (1)
5. Utah (3).

The CDC is reporting that the epidemiologic evidence indicates that clover sprouts from Jimmy John’s restaurants are a likely source of this outbreak. According to the FDA, Jimmy John’s LLC reported that all of its restaurants stopped serving clover sprouts on Feb. 24, 2020.

According to a statement, the restaurant chain will not be serving clover sprouts until the incident is resolved.

The FDA has assembled a team to investigate the outbreak of E. coli O103 linked to Jimmy Johns clover sprouts. As of February 26, 2020, the only information that has been disclosed by the FDA is that the team is currently collecting records and initiating a trace back investigation to determine the source of the clover sprouts. Local and State authorities are investigating whether implicated sprouts have been distributed elsewhere and will continue monitoring for additional illnesses.
