Country Fresh Expands Recall to Various Cut Fruits – Listeria Especially Dangerous for Pregnant Woman, Warns Listeria Lawyer
After previously recalling watermelon chunks from Walmart and RaceTrac stores for potentially being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, Country Fresh has expanded the recall to include various other chopped fruits sold by Walmart. The recall includes sliced apples, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, and grapes. The contaminated fruits were labeled with “best if used by” dates between October 3, 2020 and October 11, 2020, and were distributed in Walmart stores in the following states: AR, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MO, OK, and TX. The recall was expanded after traces of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria were found on equipment used in close proximity to the sliced fruit.
Country Fresh is working closely with the FDA to settle this issue. While Walmart is currently pulling all recalled products from shelves, customers who have previously purchased the recalled fruit should dispose of it immediately and monitor themselves for signs of a Listeria infection. As of October 3, 2020, Country Fresh has not received any reports of infection. Customers may contact Country Fresh customer service at 1-877-251-8300.
Symptoms of listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria bacteria, typically set in 1-4 weeks after consuming contaminated food; however, victims can experience symptoms as early as the same day of consumption, and as late as 70 days after consumption. But the greatest fear, says Listeria Lawyer Ron Simon, “is the danger to women who are pregnant.” In pregnant women, listeriosis often presents as flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. Pregnant women are 10 times more likely to be infected with listeriosis than anyone else and the infection often results in a severe infection in the fetus and even the loss of the fetus.
According to national listeria attorney Tony Coveny, Ph.D.: “In those that are not pregnant women, listeriosis symptoms include confusion, a stiff neck, loss of balance, fever, muscle aches, and a headache. The most severe cases are often diagnosed as meningitis and encephalitis.”
