Harris Teeter Sushi Causes Nearly 160 Illnesses
As of November 25, 2020, nearly 160 people have fallen ill after consuming Concord Harris Teeter Sushi. The Cabarrus County Health Alliance collected samples for testing to identify what caused these illnesses. The symptoms experienced by the victims of this outbreak include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, and abdominal cramps. The victims of this outbreak seemed to have consumed a sushi product from Harris Teeter between November 13 and November 19, 2020. 429 households were contacted about the outbreak after Harris Teeter used loyalty card transaction data to identify customers that purchased sushi products during the given timeframe. 107 households may not have been contacted yet, because their transactions were not so easily tracked; however, Harris Teeter and CHA did publish this information.
Victims are encouraged to drink plenty of water and get medical help if their symptoms do not improve within 24 hours. CHA Environmental Health Director, Chrystal Swinger stated that “We are encouraging anyone who purchased sushi from the George w. Liles or the Concord Parkway Harris Teeter between November 13 and November 19, to throw away any purchased items or leftovers.” According to FOX46, the George Liles location had discontinued sushi production and sale until further notice, as of November 25th. Independent Tribune quotes the communication manager for Harris Teeter, Danna Robinson, who explains that Harris Teeter threw away all sushi products from the two stores, and underwent a deep cleaning and sanitation, as well as inspection by Cabarrus Health Alliance before re-opening.
The affected sushi was narrowed down to those two locations: 358 George W. Liles Parkway NW, and 1245 Concord Parkway North. Customers who consumed sushi products from either of these locations between November 13th and November 19th, and experienced or are experiencing the symptoms listed above, should call officials at (704) 920-1207. It is critical that companies that cause outbreaks such as this one are held accountable for the damage that is done. Consumers should be able to trust businesses to provide their services and products safely, and that standard can only be upheld if companies are held accountable for damage that is done.
