Updated Compliments and Levvitts Brand Listeria Recall

Earlier this month the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall on several Levitts Foods (Canada) Inc. deli meats sold under the Levitts, Compliments, and The Deli-Shop brands.  The initial recall, issued December 7th,  was placed on several deli meat products due to the possibility of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The additional recalled items are as follows:

Compliments (BEST BEFORE 2020/DE/11 EST 48)

Montreal-Style Smoked Meat (175g)             UPC: 0 68820 13357 5

Levitts (BEST BEFORE 2020/DE/23 EST 48)

Corned Beef  (150g)                                      UPC: 8 82756 72084 1

New York Style Pastrami (150g)                    UPC: 8 82756 73084 0

Consumers are advised to not consume the deli meats. Dispose of any possibly contaminated items immediately or return them to the store of purchase. As of date, no illnesses have been reported in respect to the updated list of contaminated deli meats, however, there is one reported case believed to be linked with the initial recall on December 7th. Consumers can contact Simon Larochelle of Levitts Foods (Canada) Inc at 514-367-1654 or the CFIA regarding any questions over the recall at toll-free at 1-800-442-2342 or by emailing [email protected].

National food safety lawyer Ron Simon reminds all consumers to “Stay alert and aware of food safety recalls and to familiarize yourselves with the common symptoms of food contamination. At Ron Simon & Associates we have handled countless listeria cases and understand the seriousness of potential outbreaks and exposure. If you or someone you know begin to show symptoms contact your healthcare professional as quickly as possible.

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne, illness-causing bacteria that causes the infection listeriosis. Listeriosis can be a severe infection for those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, children, those with autoimmune disorders, and those who are pregnant. For pregnant individuals, listeriosis often presents as flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. For those who are not pregnant, listeriosis symptoms often include confusion, a stiff neck, loss of balance, fever, muscle aches, and a headache. Symptoms of listeriosis typically develop 1 to 4 weeks after consumption, days If you believe you are suffering from listeriosis, contact your physician immediately for the best course of treatment.
