On the 20th of April, 2023, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) published Lipari Foods’ recall of Lipari Branded Ground Cumin Tubs due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The recalled product was found to be containing Salmonella bacteria as a result of routine testing performed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to one National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Ron Simon, “Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, a foodborne illness that can be fatal if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the world. Salmonella bacteria are commonly found in foods like poultry, eggs, beef, and dairy products. It is especially dangerous for young children, older adults, or people with compromised immune systems.”

The symptoms that typically follow consumption of products containing Salmonella bacteria include, but are not limited to the following (as shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration: “…fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.” Individuals who are experiencing these symptoms should promptly contact their personal healthcare provider and alert public health officials.

Packaged in 6 ounce tubs, the affected Lipari Ground Cumin has a Lot code of 220914601, UPC number of 094776212620 and a Best By Date of September, 2024. Lipari Brand Ground Cumin with a risk for Salmonella was distributed in Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia, Florida, Arkansas, Alabama, Illinois, Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Customers in possession of the afore-mentioned product are urged to avoid consumption or use of the Ground Cumin, and to return to the location of purchase for a full refund.
