Summer 2026 has produced an unusually concentrated series of foodborne illness outbreaks, recalls and public health warnings. The most consequential incidents have involved Cyclospora in iceberg lettuce, Salmonella in jalapeño peppers and shell eggs, E. coli in frozen blueberries, and a particularly unusual outbreak involving both E. coli and Salmonella in alfalfa sprouts.
The outbreaks differ in their pathogens and food sources, but they share an important characteristic. Each demonstrates how a contaminated ingredient can move through a modern food supply chain faster than public health officials can identify it. The result is that consumers can become ill hundreds or thousands of miles from where a food was grown, processed or packaged.
As of August 22, 2026, none of these five outbreaks can appropriately be characterized as fully over. Some contaminated products have been recalled and removed from commerce. Others remain under active investigation. CDC guidance explains that an outbreak is considered over when new illnesses stop being identified or when the contaminated food is no longer on the market or in people’s homes.
That distinction matters as summer gives way to fall. The change in seasons does not eliminate foodborne illness risks. Some risks associated with warm weather will decline, but contaminated food can remain frozen, refrigerated or shelf stable for months. Imported produce will continue moving through the supply chain, and pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli do not disappear simply because temperatures outside fall.
1. Cyclospora and the Iceberg Lettuce Outbreak
The largest and most consequential foodborne illness outbreak of the summer has been the nationwide surge in cyclosporiasis.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. Unlike many bacterial foodborne pathogens, Cyclospora does not multiply rapidly on food. Instead, people become infected when they consume food or water contaminated with the parasite. The illness can produce prolonged watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, fatigue, appetite loss and weight loss.
The scale of the 2026 outbreak is extraordinary. CDC surveillance data through August 17showed 15,716 laboratory confirmed domestically acquired cases, 828 hospitalizations and two deaths across 47 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The CDC has also cautioned that the actual number of infections is probably substantially higher because many people do not seek medical care or are not tested for Cyclospora.
The outbreak became particularly associated with shredded iceberg lettuce supplied through Taylor Farms operations in central Mexico. FDA traceback work converged on iceberg lettuce used at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. CDC identified more than 1,644 laboratory confirmed infections associated with those Taco Bell locations, including 94 hospitalizations in the initial investigation.
The larger national outbreak, however, should not be confused with only the Taco Bell cluster. CDC surveillance has identified thousands of domestically acquired cases beyond the specific Taco Bell investigation. Federal officials have continued investigating additional clusters and possible sources.
The effects have extended beyond individual illness. Consumers have reduced purchases of lettuce and other fresh produce, while restaurants and grocery stores have faced uncertainty over which products may be affected. Reuters reported that the outbreak caused significant consumer concern and reduced confidence in fresh produce.
Litigation has also begun. A Pennsylvania woman filed a lawsuit against Taco Bell and Taylor Farms alleging that she became severely ill and required hospitalization after eating a Taco Bell meal containing iceberg lettuce. Her complaint alleges that the lettuce was contaminated with Cyclospora and that the defendants failed to adequately warn consumers. Other law firms have also announced representation of people who claim illness associated with the outbreak.
The outbreak has not been declared over.
Risk during the fall season: Moderate to high for residual cases, but the specific summer exposure risk should decline. Cyclospora traditionally has a strong seasonal pattern in the United States, with most cases occurring from May through August. The arrival of September therefore should reduce the seasonal risk, but it will not erase infections already acquired. People may continue developing symptoms or receiving diagnoses weeks after exposure.
Consumers should also understand that avoiding one recalled lettuce product does not mean all lettuce is dangerous. The evidence points to specific contaminated products and supply chains, not lettuce as a category.
2. Salmonella Linked to Jalapeño Peppers
The second major outbreak involves Salmonella Javiana linked to fresh jalapeño peppersgrown in Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.
The outbreak illustrates the difficulty of controlling contamination in widely distributed fresh produce. Jalapeños may be consumed raw or used as ingredients in foods that receive little or no cooking. According to CDC, recalled peppers were used in burritos, bowls, guacamole, pico de gallo, sandwiches, salsa, salads, soup mixes, stuffed mushrooms and condiments.
By August 19, CDC reported 431 illnesses across 32 states, an increase of 86 cases from the previous update. Hospitalizations had reached 57, with no reported deaths.
The potential reach of the outbreak is significant because a single contaminated agricultural source can be incorporated into numerous foods. A consumer does not necessarily need to remember eating a jalapeño directly. The pepper may have been diced into salsa, incorporated into guacamole or used as an ingredient in a restaurant meal.
Salmonella typically causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Symptoms generally begin six hours to six days after infection. Most people recover within four to seven days, but young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
FDA’s investigation remains active. The agency has advised distributors, restaurants and food manufacturers that received the recalled peppers not to sell, serve or use them. Businesses have also been instructed to clean and sanitize surfaces and containers that may have contacted the peppers.
No publicly reported civil lawsuit tied specifically to this outbreak had been identified as of August 22. That does not mean litigation cannot occur. Foodborne illness lawsuits often emerge after public health agencies establish a connection between an illness and a particular product.
The outbreak has not been declared over.
Risk during the fall season: High for the immediate aftermath, with continued risk if contaminated products remain in homes or food establishments. Unlike Cyclospora, Salmonella is not limited to a summer season. Jalapeños and foods containing them remain available throughout the year. The most important protection is therefore not simply waiting for cooler weather. Consumers need to identify and discard recalled products.
3. Salmonella in Shell Eggs
The third major outbreak involves Salmonella Enteritidis and shell eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services.
On July 22, the company recalled 1,589,577 dozen eggs because of possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled eggs included white shell eggs and brown cage free eggs distributed from Texas farms between June 6 and July 3. They were sold through retail and foodservice channels in several states and appeared under multiple brand names, including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Cal Maine and Country Morning.
CDC reported 98 illnesses across 17 states and 26 hospitalizations, with no deaths reported. The FDA investigation found that 40 of 44 interviewed patients with available exposure information reported eating eggs before becoming ill. Illnesses began between November 21, 2025 and June 30, 2026, demonstrating that the outbreak’s epidemiological footprint extended beyond the period when the recall became public.
The egg outbreak also demonstrates why foodborne illness investigations can take months. Consumers may eat a contaminated product, develop symptoms several days later, seek medical care and then undergo testing. Public health officials must compare laboratory results, food histories and purchasing information before identifying a common source.
The recalled eggs had ‘sell by’ or ‘best by’ dates extending through August 17. That means the immediate retail exposure window has largely passed. The CDC nevertheless has not issued a declaration that the outbreak is over.
No publicly reported lawsuit specifically connected to this Midwest Poultry Services outbreak had been identified as of August 22. Legal action could emerge if additional illnesses are identified or if investigators establish evidence of negligent practices.
Risk during the fall season: Lower from the recalled eggs themselves, but Salmonella in eggs remains a year round risk. Consumers should continue cooking eggs thoroughly and preventing cross contamination between raw eggs and ready to eat foods. Restaurants and institutional kitchens face an additional responsibility because one contaminated batch can affect many customers.
4. E. coli in Frozen Blueberries
The fourth major outbreak demonstrates why freezing does not make food inherently safe.
CDC identified 12 people in Florida and Georgia infected with the same strain of E. coli O145 associated with frozen GreenWise organic blueberries. Four people were hospitalized, and no deaths had been reported. Illnesses began between May 11 and June 5.
The investigation began after Florida health officials identified a cluster of E. coli infections. Interviews found that seven of nine patients reported eating frozen blueberries, and five specifically identified GreenWise organic frozen blueberries purchased from Publix.
The manufacturer, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of Chile, initially recalled a specific lot. Publix subsequently expanded the recall to all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries. The products were distributed through Publix stores in eight states.
The FDA later elevated the recall to Class I, its highest risk classification, reflecting the potential for serious illness from the contaminated product.
The outbreak has already produced litigation. A Florida couple sued Publix after the wife was hospitalized with E. coli, alleging strict liability, negligence and breach of implied warranties. The lawsuit claims the retailer failed to ensure that the product was safe before it reached consumers.
The investigation remains open.
Risk during the fall season: Significant if recalled berries remain in household freezers. This is one of the clearest examples of why seasonal thinking can be dangerous. Frozen blueberries are not a summer only product. A contaminated package purchased in June can remain in a freezer and be consumed in September, October or later.
Consumers should check their freezers rather than relying on the assumption that recalled products have disappeared from the market. The FDA specifically advises people not to eat, sell or serve the recalled GreenWise products.
5. E. coli and Salmonella in Alfalfa Sprouts
The newest outbreak may be the most unusual of the five because it involves two different pathogens associated with the same food.
CDC and state health departments are investigating an outbreak involving both Shiga toxin producing E. coli and Salmonella infections linked to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts and sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands. As of August 21, 55 people had been identified as ill. Two people were infected with both pathogens.
The outbreak has affected multiple states, and Wisconsin officials alone reported 17 cases. Minnesota health officials identified 23 cases, including infections involving several different strains of E. coli and Salmonella.
FDA traceback evidence identified alfalfa sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts as a source associated with illnesses. On August 19, FDA began an inspection and sample collection at the company while investigators continued trying to determine the source of contamination and whether additional products or firms are involved.
The biological characteristics of sprouts make this type of outbreak particularly difficult to control. Sprouts are grown in warm, moist conditions that encourage seed germination. Those same conditions can also allow pathogens present on seeds or introduced during production to multiply.
No publicly reported lawsuit had been identified as of August 22. The investigation is only days old, so additional legal action cannot be ruled out.
This outbreak is emphatically not over.
Risk during the fall season: High. Sprouts are not a seasonal food in the same way as certain fresh fruits and vegetables. They can be produced and sold throughout the year. Consumers who have recalled sprouts should discard them rather than trying to wash or salvage them.
What Changes When Summer Ends?
The five outbreaks demonstrate why the transition into fall should not be interpreted as the end of foodborne illness season.
Some risks will decrease. Cyclospora infections typically peak during the May through August period, so the seasonal component of that outbreak should diminish. Warm temperatures also create additional opportunities for bacterial growth when perishable foods are left unrefrigerated.
Other risks will remain unchanged.
Salmonella can contaminate eggs, peppers, sprouts and numerous other foods throughout the year. E. coli contamination can occur in fresh and frozen foods. Frozen products can remain in consumers’ homes long after an investigation begins. Imported foods continue crossing international borders regardless of the season.
The modern food supply chain also creates a structural risk that has little to do with weather. A contaminated food can be produced in one country, packaged in another, shipped through several distribution centers and ultimately served in a restaurant hundreds or thousands of miles away.
How Consumers Can Reduce Their Risk
The most effective consumer response to the summer’s outbreaks is not to stop eating lettuce, eggs, berries or other fresh foods. Instead, consumers should adopt a more targeted approach.
First, pay attention to recalls and public health alerts. FoodSafety.gov maintains a centralized source for current food safety warnings, while CDC and FDA publish detailed outbreak information.
Second, check refrigerators and freezers when an outbreak involves a packaged product. The frozen blueberry outbreak demonstrates that a product can remain a risk long after it has disappeared from store shelves.
Third, prevent cross contamination. Raw eggs, peppers, sprouts and other potentially contaminated foods should not contact ready to eat foods, utensils or countertops without appropriate cleaning and sanitizing.
Fourth, wash hands thoroughly before preparing food and after handling raw animal products or potentially contaminated foods. Proper handwashing remains one of the simplest ways to reduce transmission of foodborne pathogens.
Fifth, cook foods that can safely be cooked. Cooking is particularly important for foods associated with bacterial pathogens because adequate heat can destroy organisms that washing cannot reliably remove.
Sixth, recognize when medical attention is appropriate. Bloody diarrhea, prolonged diarrhea, high fever, significant dehydration or persistent vomiting can signal serious foodborne illness. E. coli infections can result in hemolytic uremic syndrome, while Salmonella can cause invasive infections in vulnerable people.
Finally, do not assume that a food is safe merely because it looks, smells or tastes normal. Contaminated foods frequently appear completely ordinary.
