John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. has issued an allergy alert and recall for its Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews due to undeclared coconut and milk. The recall, initiated in collaboration with the FDA, highlights the importance of allergen labeling in ensuring consumer safety.

The affected product, Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews, was distributed to various Walmart retail stores in AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VT, WV and online at www.walmart.com.

The recall was issued after consumers reported the presence of coconut cashews in the product, despite not being declared on the label.  Investigation uncovered that a small number of honey roasted cashew labels were mistakenly attached to cans of coconut cashews at the manufacturing facility.  Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged to to check the packaging for the information in the recall notice:

  • Product:  Great Value Honey Roasted Cashews
  • Packaging:  Plastic can with blue lid and blue label
  • Size: 8.25-oz.
  • UPC: 078742133348
  • Best By Date: July 8, 2025

Consumers with the recalled product are advised not to consume it and to either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers can also contact John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. for further assistance and inquiries regarding the recall at 1-800-874-8734 or by email at [email protected].

No illnesses have been reported to date but consumers should also consult with their healthcare provider if they have any concerns about potential exposure to coconut and milk allergens and monitor for any symptoms of allergic reaction.  The presence of undeclared coconut and milk poses a potential risk to individuals with allergies or sensitivities to these ingredients. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may range from

  • Mild to severe include itching
  • Swelling
  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention.

According to one national food safety attorney, the recall serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate allergen labeling in food products. Allergen labeling helps individuals with food allergies or sensitivities make informed choices and avoid potentially harmful ingredients. It also underscores the need for food manufacturers to implement rigorous quality control measures to prevent cross-contamination and ensure product safety.  Consumers can also play a role by staying informed about product recalls and food safety alerts by regularly checking for updates from reliable sources such as the FDA and Food Poisoning News to help ensure they are aware of any potential risks associated with the products they purchase and consume.
