Trader Joe’s Cashews Recall Because of Possible Salmonella Risk

Wenders LLC, based in Dublin, CA, has issued a recall for specific production lots of Trader Joe’s Nuts – 50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews.  The recall, issued in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration, was initiated due to a potential contamination with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems.   

The affected product was distributed to and sold in Trader Joe’s retail stores in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, ID, KS, LA, NM, NV, OK, OR, TN, TX, UT, and WA.

The recall was issued after routine testing by the FDA uncovered Salmonella.   Consumers who have purchased the affected product are urged to to check the packaging for the information in the recall notice:

  • Product:  Trader Joe’s Nuts – 50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews
  • Packaging:  Plastic pouches
  • Size:  16-oz.
  • SKU Number:  37884
  • Lot No. and corresponding Best Before Date:
    • T12139 – Feb 21, 2025
    • T12140 – Mar 01, 2025
    • T12141 – Mar 08, 2025
    • T12142 – Mar 10, 2025
  • Country of Origin:  India or Vietnam

Consumers with the recalled product are advised not to consume it and to either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Even if the product appears fine, the risk of contamination remains.  Consumers that have handled the product should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water and clean any surfaces or utensils that came into contact with the product.  Consumers can also contact Wenders LLC for further assistance and inquiries regarding the recall by email at [email protected]. 

No illnesses have been reported to date but consumers should also consult with their healthcare provider if they have any concerns about potential exposure to Salmonella.  A Salmonella infection may present suddenly and include the following symptoms that include, but are not limited to:

  • Gastroenteritis
    • Diarrhea, Vomiting, and/or Nausea
  • Typhoid Fever
    • Pain, Fever, Abdominal Tenderness, Bloody Stools, and Severe Diarrhea
  • Bacteremia
    • Infections in other parts of the body other than the initial site of contamination
