St. Louis, Missouri-based Baron Spices, Inc. has issued an allergy alert and recall of 708 units of their product, Blues Hog Sweet and Savory Seasoning due to the potential presence of undeclared soy and wheat allergens, which could pose serious risks to individuals with specific allergies or sensitivities.

Food Poisoning News recently reported on similar recalls due to undeclared allergens from Geisslers Supermarkets and Abdallah Candies.

Cause of the Recall

The recall was initiated after an alternative ingredient from one of Baron Foods’ suppliers was found to contain the undeclared allergens that were previously not part of the product.

Distribution

The affected product was distributed to Giant Food Stores in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

Product Details

  • Product: Blues Hog Sweet and Savory Seasoning
  • Packaging:  Plastic bottles
  • Size:  6.25 ounces
  • Lot Numbers: 034-363 and 034-364.

Consumer Action

Those with soy or wheat allergies or sensitivities should not consume the affected product.  Consumers who purchased this product should return it to the point of purchase for a full refund or throw it away if a return is not possible.  For any questions or concerns, consumers can also contactBaron Spices at 800-622-2190.

Health Risks

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported to date but consumers should contact a healthcare provider if they have concerns about exposure to the undeclared allergens and then continue to monitor for symptoms.

In a recent article, Food Poisoning News reported on the top nine allergens and the extreme danger of anaphylaxis for certain individuals.  People with allergies or sensitivity to soy or wheat may experience severe or life-threatening allergic reactions.  Allergic reactions to soy include hives, digestive discomfort, and respiratory issues while reactions to wheat include gastrointestinal distress, skin rashes, and respiratory issues.

Commenting on this article, national food safety attorney Dr. Tony Coveny said, “With all of the recent undeclared allergen-related recalls, many consumers may be worried.  However, these recalls are evidence that the public service announcements set up by the FDA are working as intended.”

While accurate labeling and allergen awareness by food producers is critical, consumers can also better protect their health by staying informed about food recalls and safety alerts by following www.fda.gov or sites like Food Poisoning News.
