Nearly 100 people suffered from food poisoning at a community event in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The incident occurred during a gathering organized in celebration of Ekadashi, a three-day religious fast dedicated to the god Vishnu, where around 1,500 attendees were present. The primary dish served was Khichdi, a traditional meal of rice and moong lentils, often prepared for such occasions.  Shortly after breaking their fast and consuming the food, many individuals began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and nausea.

Health authorities were alerted to the situation as the number of affected individuals quickly increased. Those who fell ill were promptly transported for medical treatment to a nearby hospital where the rapid response from local healthcare providers helped manage the situation.  As of this writing, no deaths or serious injuries have been reported.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the food poisoning.  Samples of the Khichdi and other food items served at the event have been collected for analysis.

Events like the one in Udaipur are significant in the local culture, drawing large crowds for communal meals and religious observances. The Ekadashi fast is a particularly important occasion, observed by many for its religious significance. The community event aimed to bring people together in a shared expression of faith and tradition, but the unexpected outbreak of food poisoning marred the festivities.

Local officials are taking this incident seriously, emphasizing the need for stringent food safety measures at public events. The health and safety of attendees at such gatherings are of utmost importance, and this incident and others highlight the potential risks involved in preparing and serving food safely to large numbers of people.

This incident in Udaipur is reminiscent of another case recently reported on by Food Poisoning News where nearly 50 people were taken ill at a local religious festival in Belagavi, India.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “As the investigation continues, authorities should work to ensure that such an incident does not occur again. The focus should be on identifying the source of contamination and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.”
