162 Salmonella Africana and 158 Salmonella Braenderup illnesses across much of the United States (at least 25 states). As many as three quarters of the victims in the Africana outbreak recall eating cucumbers during the incubation period. This outbreak has been linked to Florida grown cucumbers, and has hospitalized more than 50.

Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., of Delray, Florida, has issued a recall after one of its product samples tested positive for salmonella. While it remains to be seen if other producers products are also implicated, swift action was taken to avoid further illnesses.

State and federal agencies are on high alert and looking for other matching cases in this ongoing outbreak.

According to Ron Simon, the national salmonella lawyer, “the full impact of this outbreak is still unknown, but the initial numbers point to a very large scale outbreak, with many, many more victims to be identified. We will be filing an initial suit in this cucumber salmonella outbreak soon to begin to use the discovery process to identify what went wrong int he production adn packaging of this product.

Consumers should use caution in eating cucumbers if uncertain of their origin.
