The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week it was investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella connected to cucumbers that has so far led to 26 cases and 9 hospitalizations across 15 states. The cucumber producer, Bedner Growers, Inc. shortly after announced a voluntary recall for whole cucumbers due to potential Salmonella contamination. More companies, including JFE Franchising Inc., Walmart, and Albertsons Companies have also announced recalls of cucumbers and products containing cucumbers from Bedner Growers potentially linked to this outbreak.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated because they have been linked to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak currently under investigation by federal, state, and local health authorities.

Distribution

The JFE Franchising Inc. products were sold under the SNOWFRUIT or SNOWFOX labels through retailers including Kroger, Roundy’s (Pick n Save and Metro Market), and Weis Market stores in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and New York.

The Albertsons Companies products were sold at ACME, Balducci’s Food Lovers Market, Kings Food Market, Safeway, Shaw’s, and Start Market stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The Walmart products were sold in select Walmart stores in Texas.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans.
