Salmonella: Signs & Symptoms
Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. In rare cases, the infection travels to the bloodstream, creating a “septic” infection and leading to complications including, but not limited to, arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis.
Salmonella septicimia is a life-threatening Salmonella infection that has spread to the bloodstream. Salmonella septicemia can be caused by any of the Salmonella bacteria, which are found in contaminated food and water. The infection is systemic and affects virtually every organ system. Salmonella bacteria in the blood – again, Salmonella septicemia – triggers a potentially life-threatening, whole-body inflammatory response.
