Allergy Alert Issued for Organic Yellow Peas by Maine Grains Inc.
On the 27th of January 2021, Maine Grains Inc. of Skowhegan, Maine announced the recall of 2,000 lbs. of their Organic Yellow Peas, due to an allergy concern. The Organic Yellow Peas may contain undeclared Soybeans, which could cause serious reactions in individuals with Soybean allergies. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding food-cause allergies “The body’s immune response can be severe and life threatening”.
All of the Organic Yellow Peas were either distributed to online consumers through the Maine Grain website, or in the Northeastern part of the United States. Most of the Organic Yellow Peas were sent and distributed to consumers in New York City through retail stores.
After it was discovered that a farmer was mistakenly shipped yellow soybeans with the similar shape, size and color as the Maine Grains’ Organic Yellow soybeans, and distributed them as “Organic Yellow Peas”, Maine Grains Inc. of Skowhegan Maine initiated the voluntary recall.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working closely with Maine Grains of Skowhegan, Maine to solve this issue and has been fruitful in preventing any illnesses up to this point from the soybean allergy concern.
The afore-mentioned recalled product contains a white sticker lot number on the back of the bag ending with the combination 3YP19. The product may have been re-packaged under the brand label GrowNYC and is wrapped in clear 1 lb. cellophane bags. The recalled product bears the label of Maine Grains “Crop Rotation Organic Yellow Peas”.
