Colonna Brothers of North Bergen, NJ has expanded its voluntary recall of ground cinnamon products due to potentially high lead content.  Lead is a neurotoxin that can affect nearly every system in the human body and is especially dangerous for young children.

Background

This recall was initiated following FDA’s targeted sampling of discount cinnamon brands.

This recall expands upon a previous voluntary recall issued on March 6, 2024, which included several other lot codes of the same products. Those earlier recalled items have already been removed from store shelves.

The affected products were distributed nationwide through retail stores and mail order.

Colonna Brothers said it is cooperating voluntarily and states they have not violated any federal regulations regarding lead levels in spices or testing protocols.

Consumer Action

Consumers who have purchased the affected items should either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact Colonna Brothers at 201-864-1115 between 9 AM and 5 PM EST.

Health Risks

No illnesses related to these products have been reported to date. Anyone concerned about potential lead exposure should consult their healthcare provider.

  • Neurological Damage: Lead is a neurotoxin that can impair neurological development, particularly in children. Exposure to lead during critical stages of brain development can lead to learning disabilities, lowered IQ, attention deficits, and behavioral problems.
  • Developmental Delays: Lead exposure in utero or during early childhood can lead to developmental delays in children, affecting cognitive, motor, and language skills. These delays can have long-lasting impacts on a child’s overall development and academic performance.
  • Behavioral Disorders: Lead exposure has been linked to behavioral disorders such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and aggression in children. These behavioral changes can interfere with social interactions, academic achievement, and overall well-being.
  • Reproductive Effects: Lead exposure has been associated with reproductive problems, including reduced fertility, miscarriage, and developmental abnormalities in offspring. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the effects of lead exposure, as lead can cross the placenta and affect fetal development.
  • Cardiovascular Effects: Lead exposure has been linked to cardiovascular problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Lead can disrupt the function of the cardiovascular system, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality.

Commenting on this story, one national Lead poisoning lawyer said, “ This incident and other recent, related ones show the importance of ongoing food safety monitoring and the need for consumers to stay informed about product recalls to protect their health.”
