On the 15th of June, 2022, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced the Californian 888 Food Company’s voluntary recall of their various Shrimp and Fish Balls and Cakes. The recall was issued due to the product’s possibly containing undeclared eggs, and/or egg allergens. As listed on the FDA’s website, the affected 888 Food Company products are as following: Ho King Fish Ball, Ho King Fried Fish ball, Giai Phat Fried Fish Loaf, Giai Phat Fried Fish Cake, Giai Phat Fish Ball, Giai Phat Fried Fish Ball, Giai Phat Featherback Fish Ball, Giai Phat Fried Featherback Fish Ball, Giai Phat Shrimp Ball, and Giai Phat Cuttle Fish Ball. The affected Lot Numbers, listed on the U.S Food & Drug Administration’s website, can be found on the product’s packaging at the upper right corner. While the various recalled fish and shrimp products were primarily distributed in California, some were shipped to Illinois and Indiana for retail distribution as well.
The recall of the prior-listed products was issued after a an 888 Food Company customer reported having suffered from an anaphylactic shock, which is common as a result of an egg allergy, as described by Mayo Clinic “Eggs are one of the most common allergy-causing foods for children. Egg allergy symptoms usually occur a few minutes to a few hours after eating eggs or foods containing eggs. Signs and symptoms range from mild to severe and can include skin rashes, hives, nasal congestion, and vomiting or other digestive problems. Rarely, egg allergy can cause anaphylaxis — a life-threatening reaction.” Individuals who know themselves to be allergic to eggs, or are simply experiencing these symptoms after consumption of the 888 Food Company’s recalled products, should first contact their personal healthcare provider and then alert their public health authorities of the reaction.
