The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Importations Pie Che Dolci Inc., based in Laval, Quebec, Canada, have issued a voluntary recall of Sweet Cream-brand Mini Patisserie due to potential Salmonella contamination and connection with a Salmonella outbreak in Canada. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
The recall was initiated after an investigation into an outbreak of foodborne illness by the CFIA. The investigation is still active.
So far, 61 illnesses have been reported across Canada in the following provinces:
- British Columbia – 4 cases
- Alberta – 2 cases
- Ontario – 21 cases
- Quebec – 33 cases
- New Brunswick – 1 case
To date, 17 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have yet been reported.
The breakdown of cases by gender is 61% female and 39% male, aged 3 to 88 years old.
Many of those who became ill reported to investigators that they ate mini pastries at catered events or other places where the impacted products were served.
People became sick between late September 2024 and mid-December 2024. Additional illnesses may still be reported as there is often a delay between onset of illness and when the illness is reported to health authorities. It is also possible that many people who became ill then recovered and did not report their illness.
Distribution
The affected products were distributed to a variety of businesses and organizations, including bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, retirement residences, and may have also been served at catered events.
The recalled products were distributed to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

Health Risks

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading Salmonella lawyer said, “A number of people have already been sickened across Canada from this outbreak. Any consumer or business with the affected products must stop using or serving them immediately.”
