Trader Joe’s Voluntarily Recalls Items: Potential Sushi Listeria Contamination

Trader Joe’s voluntary recall on several of its products was issued last week after their supplier, Fuji Foods announced its own recall on several ready-to-eat sushi, salads, and spring rolls.

After a routine inspection of the Fuji Food facility in Brockton, Massachusetts, the Food and Drug Association (FDA) announced that a listeria contamination had been detected. This is the first recall that Fuji Foods has ever had to issue. There have been no reported illnesses linked to this contamination so far.

The CEO of Fuji Food Products, Farrell Hirch addressed the issue in a recent press conference saying, “as responsible processors of safe, fresh food for nearly 30 years, we are addressing this problem vigorously and we apologize to those who are affected by it,”.

All Fuji Food recalled products were sold under the brand names Okami or Trader Joe’s. All recalled products were packaged in plastic containers with clear lids. The items include Trader Joe’s ready-to-eat meals of California Rolls, Classic California Rolls with Brown Rice & Avocado, Spicy California Rolls, Tempura Shrimp Crunch Rolls, Tofu Spring Rolls, Shrimp Spring Rolls, Smoked Salmon Philly Roll, Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl, Banh Mi Inspired Noodle Bowl and the Queso Fundido Spicy Cheese Dip.

The FDA says the products of concern were distributed to Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The full list of packaging labels and sell by dates which are included in this recall can be found here.

Listeria is a bacteria which can cause a mild to severe illness known as Listeriosis. In healthy individuals the illness can pass within a few days. However, for individuals with weakened immune systems such as the young, old, or expectant, Listeriosis can cause severe and dangerous illness.

Consumers who have purchased any of these products are urged to return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.
