New Mexico ranks at the top of states affected by the Listeria Caramel Apple outbreak linked to Bidart apples that has sickened at least 32 and been linked to 7 deaths. The six New Mexico Listeria cases surpass the five in Missouri, followed by four in Texas, Arizona and Minnesota. And according to sources in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at least one of the victims was pregnant at the time and she and her son, born three months early, were infected. At least 10 pregnancy related illnesses have been reported nation-wide. New Mexico has recorded at least six cases, all linked to Bidart Brother’s, a supplier of apples used to make caramel covered apples for sale in commercial packages. And in at least one of those cases, the source is known to be Smith’s Pharmacy, a retail establishment in the center of greater Albuquerque’s East-side. Smith’s Pharmacy is located at 4016 Louisiana Boulevard Northeast, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87110. It is unclear at this time how many of the six New Mexico cases are linked to this particular establishment or originate in Albuquerque, where nearly a third of New Mexico residents live.
New Mexico residents who believe they have eaten apples from Bidart Brothers, especially in cases where they may have ingested caramel covered apples, are encouraged to seek medical attention for any illness that results. The dissemination of the caramel apples in Albuquerque should put residents on alert for the signs of Listeria, including neck and head pain, and gastrointestinal illness.
