Save on Foods Announces Recall and Salmonella Contamination Prevention

Save on Foods just announced a recall on several of its combo meals due to a possible salmonella contamination. Save on Foods is a grocery store chain with locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Yukon.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the products included in the recall include Save on Foods brand lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork, ginger beef and honey garlic chicken combo meals. The recalled items’ “Best if Used By” dates are between December 31, 2021, and January 2, 2022. The products of concern have been reported to have been sold at all the previously listed five locations.

Canadian health officials urge anyone who has purchased the above recalled meals to check their freezers to see if they may still be in possession of any of these. Anyone still in possession of the recalled items is directed to dispose of them immediately or return them to their original place of purchase for a refund.

Salmonella is a bacteria which may be found in our environment, such as in contaminated water or in animals. Oftentimes raw meats, fruits, and vegetables which are contaminated with salmonella bacteriatransmit salmonella infection to humans when they are eaten. According to the CDC, since salmonella contaminated food “usually looks, tastes, and smells normal”, the most important thing is to prevent its spread.

The most important rules to follow, in order to prevent the spread of salmonella, are to clean, separate, cook, and chill. It is imperative to wash your hands before and after handling food, especially eggs, raw meat, poultry, and seafood. Additionally, raw foods, such as meats and their juices, should be kept separate from foods which will be consumed raw, such as vegetables, as well as their perspective surfaces and utensils. Finally, make sure to cook raw foods, such as meat, poultry, and seafood, to their proper internal temperature and to promptly store food in the refrigerator to ensure the mitigation of unwanted bacteria growth.

By following these four rules, you can greatly decrease the likelihood of contracting the sometimes dangerous and always unpleasant experience of salmonella infection. For further information regarding salmonella prevention, visit the CDC’s website here.
