The ongoing multistate outbreak of salmonella linked to backyard poultry continues to grow and is on track to exceed the 2017 toll of 1,120 people who got sick from contact with backyard poultry. Listeria Poses Threat to Unborn Children: Three Women Miscarry from Recent Listeria Outbreak in Spain  In a recent outbreak of listeria in southern Spain, 197 cases have been confirmed. The origin of this outbreak is being investigated as possibly from a pork package called ‘Mecha’ distributed from a Seville-based Magrudis. Proper Handling of Poultry to Avoid Food Poisoning: The Unsuspected Danger of Washing Poultry The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently gathered experimental statistics on the perceived benefits of washing raw poultry before cooking and what they found is surprising. Out of the participants who washed/rinsed their raw poultry, 60 percent of their sinks were found to be splattered with bacteria afterwards. Furthermore, even after cleaning their sinks, 14 percent of these were still found to have bacteria. E. coli in Water: Water in Marshall, Washington Possibly Contaminated with E. Coli The city of Marshall discovered possible E. Coli contamination in their water system while replacing the 40-year old water pump, two weeks ago. When Marshall’s city-wide water pump stopped working, a crew was sent to install a new one.
