Dog owners beware! Salmonella in your dog treats?

Following alarming test results, Stormberg Foods, creator of Beg & Barker Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, Billo’s Best Friend Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, and Green Coast Pets Chicken Crisps Dog Treat, is recalling various sizes and batches of these three products.

On July 6, 2022, the safety of these three treats was called into question when Stormberg was notified by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (NCDA & CS) that a sample collected tested positive for Salmonella. The products are believed to have been produced between the dates of June 8, 2022, and June 22, 2022. These treats are distributed in warehouses located in CA, MN, NC, and RI but then shipped nationwide to stores and online to consumers. While no illnesses have been reported, to date, consumers are asked to please contact a veterinarian if a dog or pup has consumed these recalled treats and has shown signs of illness. Symptoms in dogs with Salmonella can include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs will exhibit a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

Stormberg Foods and NCDA & CS are continuing their investigation into the source of the issue.

The salmonella contamination is also a threat to the human caretakers.  Salmonella symptoms in humans can include nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever and headache, muscle pain, fatigue, body chills, and bloody stool. Consumers are advised to wash their hands and clean all counters and containers that have come into contact with these treats.

Consumers who have purchased these products and/or have pets who have become ill are urged to notify [email protected] ASAP! The FDA has posted the coding information that can be found on the back of each package to the left or right of the UPC code.  Share all the product information for return or proper disposal information. Consumers with questions may contact the customer services department via (919) 947-6011, Monday – Saturday 3:00 am – 9:00 pm EST, or email 24h/day.
