Lyons Magnus LLC, based in Fresno, California, has announced a voluntary recall of Lyons ReadyCare-brand and Sysco Imperial-brand frozen supplemental shakes due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
This recall is connected to the previously announced outbreak of Listeria connected to these frozen nutritional shakes that, so far, have resulted in 37 hospitalizations and 11 deaths in long-term care homes in multiple states.
In the press release, the company said they initiated the recall “…in response to a recall of the products by their manufacturer, Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. (“Prairie Farms”) from the Prairie Farms facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana.”
Distribution
The company said that they are the distributor of the impacted products, “…which were manufactured and supplied to Lyons Magnus by Prairie Farms.” The recalled items were primarily distributed nationwide to long-term care facilities and were not available for general retail sale.

Health Risks
Listeria infection symptoms typically develop within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but can appear as soon as the same day or as late as 10 weeks afterward. Initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe cases can progress to headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The infection poses particular risks to pregnant women, newborns, adults over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While pregnant women typically experience mild symptoms like fever and fatigue, listeria infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection in newborns. Other individuals can become infected but rarely develop serious illness.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately for evaluation and care.
Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading Listeria lawyer who is representing one victim in this deadly Listeria frozen nutritional shake outbreak said, “Seniors are some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Unfortunately, a Listeria infection can cause serious injury to this population. Anyone, no matter what age, who believes they have symptoms of listeriosis, should contact their doctor right away.”
