Metro Produce Distributors Inc., based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has initiated a voluntary recall of all Lunds & Byerlys fresh guacamole products. This recall is due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (“Listeria”). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
The potential for Listeria contamination was discovered through a routine sampling program conducted by Metro Produce Distributors. As a result, the company has halted production and distribution of these products while they investigate the source of the contamination.
The affected products were primarily sold at Lunds & Byerlys grocery stores in the Twin Cities and St. Cloud areas of Minnesota. Select Taco Mas food bars carried the recalled guacamole from July 27 to July 31, 2024.
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge and cooperation of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Health Risks
As of now, no illnesses or adverse reactions in connection to the recalled products have been reported.
Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
Consumers who are experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Commenting on this story, the national Listeria lawyer who represents one of the decedents, and their family, in the Deli Meat (Boar’s Head) Listeria Lawsuit, stated: “Food safety measures like this recall are critically important in helping to prevent widespread foodborne illnesses. For now, however, anyone who has consumed the recalled products should contact their medical provider immediately if they are experiencing symptoms of food poisoning or suspect meningitis, often evinced with a soar neck and fever. Listeria is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and medical attention is nearly always mandated.”
