Two Deaths Reported in Historic Cyclosporiasis Outbreak; Ron Simon & Associates Represents Hundreds of Victims Nationwide

August 3, 2026 – The ongoing nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak has reached another tragic milestone, with Michigan health officials confirming two deaths associated with the outbreak. The parasitic illness has now resulted, as of July 30, 2026, in 193 hospitalizations in Michigan alone and has sickened thousands of people across the country, making it one of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreaks ever documented in the United States.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported that both individuals who died had significant underlying medical conditions that were exacerbated by severe dehydration and complications from cyclosporiasis. While deaths from Cyclospora cayetanensis infection are uncommon, the outbreak demonstrates that the parasite can cause devastating consequences, particularly among older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.

As of the latest update, Michigan has reported 11,234 cases of cyclosporiasis, with 193 people hospitalized because of the severity of their illness. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed thousands of laboratory-confirmed cases, while thousands of additional suspected cases remain under investigation, indicating that the true scope of the outbreak is likely much larger.

Numerous Cyclospora lawsuits have now been filed, including Cyclospora lawsuits in Michigan, Cyclospora lawsuits in Kansas, and Cyclospora lawsuits in Ohio.

Investigation Continues

Federal and state investigators continue working to determine the complete source of the outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s traceback investigation has primarily focused on shredded iceberg lettuce supplied through growers in central Mexico. Although one laboratory test that initially suggested contamination was later determined to be a false positive, the FDA has stated that its epidemiological and traceback evidence continues to support the investigation into that supply chain while officials examine whether additional contaminated products contributed to the outbreak.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People become infected after consuming contaminated food or water. Because the parasite requires time outside the human body before becoming infectious, the disease is generally not spread directly from person to person.

Symptoms often begin approximately one week after exposure and may include:

  • Prolonged watery diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal cramping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Bloating
  • Low-grade fever

Without appropriate antibiotic treatment, symptoms can continue for weeks or even months, frequently improving and then returning.

Ron Simon & Associates Represents Hundreds of Victims

As the outbreak has continued to grow, Ron Simon & Associates is representing hundreds of individuals who became ill after consuming contaminated food linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Ron Simon has also represented numerous families in wrongful death lawsuits arising from foodborne illness outbreaks, bringing decades of experience holding food manufacturers, distributors, and retailers accountable when contaminated food causes devastating and preventable loss of life.

The firm’s attorneys are now actively investigating claims on behalf of individuals who suffered serious illness, hospitalization, lost wages, and other damages as a result of this outbreak.

“Food producers and distributors have a legal responsibility to ensure that the products reaching consumers are safe,” says food safety attorney Ron Simon. “When contaminated food causes preventable illness, those responsible must be held accountable. Our firm is committed to helping victims recover the compensation they deserve while working to improve food safety and prevent future outbreaks.”

Individuals who experienced prolonged diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms after consuming fresh produce and were diagnosed with cyclosporiasis may have legal claims. Because medical records, laboratory testing, and food purchase information can become more difficult to obtain over time, individuals who believe they were affected are encouraged to seek legal guidance promptly.
