Irvington Seafood Recalls Crabmeat Product Due to Listeria
Irvington Seafood has recalled packages of their crab meat product due to Listeria concerns.
On Tuesday, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published ISF, Inc. Dba Irvington Seafood’s recall of their “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat” product.
“They have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA report read, “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The recalled Irvington Seafood products were packaged and sold in tubs weighing 1 lb., to various retailers in the states of Alabama and Mississippi.
The Irvington, Alabama-based company, Irvington Seafood, announced the recall on May 17, which was followed by the FDA’s publication four days later. The recall was initiated after the owner of Irvington Seafood, Kevin Sakprasit, received positive results from a Listeria test taken on samples of the Crabmeat product. Irvington Seafood then immediately proceeded to voluntarily recall the product, “to ensure the safety of our consumers.”
According to one National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Dr. Tony Coveny, “Listeria is a very dangerous bacteria, with different side-effects than many of the more known bacteria, like salmonella or E. coli. Listeria often leads to meningitis, encephalitis, or in pregnant women leads to miscarriages, still births premature deliveries.”
Customers who are in possession of the recalled Irvington Seafood product are encouraged to either discard the product or return to the location of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers may call the number 251-610-4159 for more information.
This investigation is ongoing, coordinated by the FDA and Irvington Seafood.
