In cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration, KALO Foods, LLC has issued recalls for its Single Slice Carrot Cake and Single Slice Chocolate Cake due to an undeclared soy allergen, which can pose a risk to individuals with soy allergies who may unknowingly consume the product.

Background

The recall was initiated when a customer notified KALO Foods, LLC that packages labeled as Carrot Cake contained the ingredient panel for Chocolate Cake and that packages labeled as Chocolate Cake contained the ingredient panel for Carrot Cake.  However, the packages with the actual Carrot Cake product contain soy, which is not included on the ingredients label due to the mix-up.

Distribution

The affected products were distributed to retail stores in North Carolina and Virginia between February 28, 2024 and February 29, 2024.

Product Details:

  • Product Names:
    • Single Slice Gluten Free Carrot Cake
    • Single Slice Gluten Free Chocolate Cake
  • Packaging:  Clear plastic clam shells
  • Size:  6-oz.

What Consumers Should Do

  1. Check their refrigerator for the specified products
  2. Do not consume the Carrot Cake product if they have a soy allergy
  3. Return for Refund – Consumers who have the affected product are urged to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.
  4. Discard: If unable to return the products, discard them safely.
  5. Contact KALO Foods, LLC: Consumers with any questions or concerns can contact company representative Michael Cusato Monday through Saturday from 6 am to 4 pm Eastern Time at 1-336-949-4802.

Potential Health Risks

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported to date but consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential exposure to a soy allergen and also monitor for any symptoms of allergic reactions.  For those with soy allergies, consuming soy can face serious health risks.  Symptoms of soy allergy can include

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling
  • Anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention

Stay Informed

It’s crucial to identify and rectify such labeling discrepancies promptly to prevent harm to consumers, said a national food safety attorney, commenting on this story.

Remember, vigilance in food safety is essential. Consumers should always check labels, especially if they or members of their family have allergies, to ensure everyone’s well-being.  Consumers can also stay informed by regularly checking for recalls and safety alerts on sites like www.fda.gov or Food Poisoning News to protect themselves and their family.
