Lactalis Salmonella Outbreak: French dairy expands recall of baby milk products contaminated by salmonella
Lactalis produces baby milk products that are distributed across the world and that have been linked to salmonella outbreaks. The French dairy company has recently expanded its recall of infant milk products to include more than 12 million boxes sold in 83 countries. The expansion is the second since Lactalis initiated the recall that impacted 30 countries in December 2017.
Food poisoning, linked to salmonella, caused by the baby products has affected three dozen babies in France who have become sick after consuming the milk products. Infants in Spain and Greece are suspected to also have become ill from the Lactalis products.
Lactalis baby milk products are also sold in the United States. There are no confirmed cases of sick infants in the US as yet.
A family-owned company, Lactalis is the largest dairy group in the world with 230 industrial plants in 43 countries and 75,000 employees. Officials are investigating salmonella contamination at one Lactalis production plant, while salmonella was found in another factory in northwest France in December. The recall of their baby milk products is facing a criminal investigation as well because of what has been called a bungled recall.
Food safety concerns around the Lactalis recall include the additional issues caused by food chains continuing to sell the baby milk products. The recall is massive and complicated, by legal issues and by parent outrage.
