Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella: Moringa Leaf Powder — January 2026

In January 2026, federal and state health officials began publicly warning consumers about a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to dietary supplements containing moringa leaf powder. What initially appeared to involve Live It Up-brand Super Greens supplement powder later expanded to include Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules and, by May 2026, additional moringa capsule products. The investigation became a significant example of how powdered “health” or “superfood” products can create national food-safety problems when contaminated ingredients are distributed into long-shelf-life consumer products.

The outbreak was first publicly announced by CDC on January 14, 2026, when 45 people in 21 states had been infected with the same strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. Twelve people had been hospitalized, and no deaths had been reported. At that point, people sickened in the outbreak had reported consuming Live It Up Super Greens supplement powder, and the company had informed FDA that it would initiate a voluntary recall. CDC advised consumers not to eat the recalled supplement powders, to discard or return them, and to wash surfaces that may have contacted the product.

By January 29, 2026, the investigation had grown substantially. CDC reported 65 illnesses in 28 states, 14 hospitalizations, and no deaths. The investigation also expanded beyond one strain: officials added Salmonella Newport to the outbreak investigation, meaning the outbreak involved both Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Newport. CDC and FDA stated that epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback evidence showed that moringa leaf powder was contaminated with Salmonella and was making people sick.

The January 29 update also identified another recalled product: Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules, lot # A25G051, with an expiration date of July 2028. Those capsules were sold nationwide. FDA’s investigation found a common manufacturer between Live It Up-brand Super Greens and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules, and both products used moringa leaf powder. That finding was important because it shifted the investigation from a single branded finished product to a shared contaminated ingredient or manufacturing pathway.

The implicated Live It Up products were dietary supplement powders sold in Original and Wild Berry flavors. According to CDC, Superfoods, Inc. recalled Live It Up Super Greens supplement powders on January 15, 2026, including products with expiration dates from August 2026 through January 2028. The products were sold nationwide in the United States, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. FDA later reported that Live It Up’s recall was expanded to include nationwide distribution and international distribution to consumers in the United Kingdom.

As investigators interviewed sick people, a consistent exposure pattern emerged. In the January 29 CDC update, 35 of 40 interviewed people—88 percent—reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder. Thirty-one reported consuming Live It Up Super Greens supplement powders only, three reported consuming Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules only, and one person reported consuming both. That level of exposure among interviewed outbreak patients strongly supported moringa leaf powder as the outbreak vehicle.

Laboratory testing provided additional confirmation. CDC explained that public health investigators used PulseNet, the national molecular subtyping network for foodborne disease surveillance, to identify illnesses that were likely part of the outbreak. Whole genome sequencing showed that bacteria from sick people were closely related genetically, which suggested a common source. Public health officials in Illinois tested opened Live It Up Super Greens powder collected from a sick person’s home, and whole genome sequencing confirmed that the Salmonella found in the powder matched the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium.

By March 17, 2026, CDC had closed the investigation with 97 reported illnesses in 32 states, 26 hospitalizations, and no deaths. Of the 67 people interviewed at that time, 59—again 88 percent—reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder. FDA reported that the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport was detected in two moringa leaf powder ingredient samples, while the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium was detected in an opened sample of Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules. State partners also detected the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium in opened Live It Up samples and in an unopened Live It Up sample.

Those laboratory findings were particularly significant because they connected the outbreak strains not only to consumer-opened products but also to ingredient and unopened product samples. An unopened contaminated sample is powerful evidence in a foodborne illness investigation because it reduces the likelihood that contamination occurred after purchase in a consumer’s home. Together, the epidemiologic interviews, traceback work, and laboratory testing created a coherent picture: contaminated moringa leaf powder had entered dietary supplement products and caused a multistate outbreak.

The investigation did not remain closed for long. CDC later reported that since the March 17 closure, 22 new illnesses from four states had been reported, causing the investigation to be reopened. As of May 27, 2026, CDC reported 119 people infected with one of the outbreak strains across 36 states, with 32 hospitalizations and no deaths. Illness onset dates ranged from August 22, 2025, through April 26, 2026. CDC also cautioned that the true number of sick people was likely higher because many people recover without medical care and are never tested for Salmonella.

The reopened investigation also involved additional moringa products. CDC reported that, on May 26, 2026, Total Nutrition, Inc. recalled TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa 10,000 mg capsules and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa 10,000 mg capsules. CDC stated that epidemiologic information showed some lots of TNVitamins Moringa Capsules may be making people sick and that CDC and FDA were continuing to determine whether other products were causing illness.

The public-health concern was heightened by the long shelf life of these products. Many recalled supplements had expiration dates extending into 2027 or 2028, meaning contaminated products could remain in homes, offices, gyms, or retail channels long after the initial recall announcement. FDA specifically reminded consumers and retailers not to eat, sell, or serve recalled Why Not Natural capsules or recalled Live It Up Super Greens powders.

The outbreak also illustrates the risk of powdered supplements. Consumers often view greens powders, capsules, and plant-based supplements as wellness products rather than as foods capable of transmitting pathogens. But moringa leaf powder is an agricultural ingredient. If contaminated before, during, or after processing, it may carry pathogens into finished products that are consumed without a cooking step. Unlike meat or some produce, supplement powders are usually mixed into beverages, smoothies, or foods and consumed directly, giving Salmonella an opportunity to infect consumers.

Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps beginning six hours to six days after exposure. Illness usually lasts four to seven days, but some patients become sick enough to require hospitalization. Children under five, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness. CDC advised consumers with severe symptoms to contact a healthcare provider and advised businesses not to sell or serve recalled products.

The January 2026 moringa leaf powder outbreak is a reminder that foodborne illness investigations often evolve. What began as a Live It Up Super Greens alert became a broader investigation into moringa leaf powder, multiple supplement brands, common manufacturing connections, product recalls, ingredient testing, and long-shelf-life consumer exposure. The core lesson is straightforward: powdered dietary supplements are not immune from foodborne contamination, and when an ingredient like moringa leaf powder is distributed widely, a contamination event can become a national outbreak affecting consumers across dozens of states.
