USDA Announces Recall on Ezzo Sausage Company Products for Listeria Monocytogenes
On November 11, 2019, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a Class I recall on approximately 25,115 pounds of sausage products from Ezzo Sausage Company, a Columbus, Ohio establishment, due to possible Listeria monocytogene contamination.
The products of concern have already been shipped to distribution centers for retailers and markets in Indiana and Ohio. There is concern that these products may still be in distribution centers, retail stores, personal refrigerators, and freezers. The products of concern include all Ezzo Sausage Company’s ready-to-eat sausage products produced on October 29, 2019, October 30, 2019 and November 5, 2019. All concerned products have the establishment number inside the USDA mark of inspection as follows: “EST. 1838A. ” A complete list of the recalled products can be viewed here as well as pictures of their labels here.
The contamination was discovered when a food safety testing laboratory notified the company that there had been a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes. Food Safety and Inspection Services was notified and the recall was promptly issued.
Listeria monocytogenes cause an illness known as Listeriosis. While Listeriosis does not pose a serious threat to healthy individuals, it may for those with weakened immune systems such as the old, pregnant, or ill. Listeriosis causes flu-like symptoms such as headache, fever, and nausea.
While there have been no reported cases linked to this contamination so far, National Listeria Lawyer Ron Simon encourages anyone who consumed one of these products and became ill to contact a healthcare provider immediately.
