According to the Washington State Department of Health (WSDH) a large outbreak of Salmonella has been identified with 56 Salmonella victims in 8 counties. The majority of the 56 Salmonella victims are residents of King County, with 44 victims identified in in and around Seattle. But there are also 4 victims in Snohomish County, 2 victims each in Mason and Thurston Counties, and 1 victim in each of Pierce, Grays Harbor, Yakima, and Clark Counties. According to the WSDH, at least five, or just under 10 percent, of the victims have been hospitalized – consistent with many Salmonella outbreaks.
At present the exact source remains a mystery, though officials in the WSHD are naming pork as a common source. Many of the Salmonella victims reported having eaten pork in the days leading up to the onset of symptoms, including whole roasted pig that was served at a number of private events. Officials are warning residents to avoid raw or under-cooked pork, reminding residents that pork must be heated to a minimum of 145 degrees, internal.
