Prior to your July 4 holiday events – check your onions!

Georgia’s A&M Farm, known for their sweet Vidalia onions, is voluntarily recalling onions packed on a single pack line between June 20 – June 23, 2022.  Prior to the July 4 weekend, internal testing teams found listeria affecting select onions.  Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious (sometimes fatal) infections in young kids, pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

The sweet onions recalled were sold only in bulk, under the brand name Little Bear, and quickly traced to impacted retailers.  They were sold at two retail chains across 5 states with a PLU 4159 sticker July 22-24.

See the FDA posting for all locations.

Fortunately, this was caught internally and quickly so no illnesses have been reported.  Nor have any other products of A&M been affected by the recall.  Those affected have been contacted and all have been asked to remove the onions from their inventory and destroy or return them for a refund.

“The health and safety of consumers are our top priorities here at A&M Farms. We are glad that most of the implicated product never reached stores, but we are focused intently on alerting consumers in those areas that did receive the onions.” said Aries Haygood, co-owner of A&M Farms. “We stopped packing on the implicated line, and I am personally overseeing a full cleaning and sanitation of the equipment and an internal review of our processes.”

So, check your onions and have a happy and safe Fourth of July!
