Certain bags of Freshpet Select Fresh From The Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe have potentially been contaminated by the food-borne bacteria, salmonella. A voluntary recall of a single lot of the 4.5lb bags has been issued. Consumers are warned to look for a sell-by date of 10/29/22 and to refrain from feeding dogs and pups this potentially contaminated dogfood. In a statement made by Freshpet’s owner, Freshpet says “the safety of pets and pet parents and the quality of our products are of the greatest importance, and we value the trust placed in Freshpet.”

Unfortunately, from a lot that was designated to be destroyed, a small portion was accidentally shipped to stores. In what is admittedly an oversight, there is a strong indication that the manufacturing process needs better oversight. These 4.5lb recalled bags have a sell date of 10/29/22, and they share a UPC of 627975011673.  They are sold at limited Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia, some Target stores, and other select retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.

Fortunately, no other Freshpet products were believed implicated or affected by this recall.

Salmonella symptoms in humans can include nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever and headache, muscle pain, fatigue, body chills, and bloody stool. Be certain to wash your hands and clean your counters if you have come in contact with this food. Symptoms in dogs with Salmonella can include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs will exhibit a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Contact your veterinarian if your pup has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms. Concerned pet parents with questions should call 1.800.285.0563 Mon. through Fri., 9 am–9 pm (EDT) and Sat. through Sun. 9 am -1 pm (EDT) or visit FreshPet Recall.
