Daily Harvest Lentils + Crumbles Causes Mass Food Poisoning, Reason Still Undetermined

On June 23, 2022, a popular vegan food company, Daily Harvest, recalled its French Lentil + Leek Crumbles after receiving numerous consumer reports of gastrointestinal illness and liver function issues. To date, Daily Harvest has received around 470 adverse reaction reports in connection to their French Lentil + Leek Crumbles product.

Daily Harvest is recalling 28,000 units of French Lentil + Leek Crumbles packaged in a 12 oz white pouch labeled “Daily Harvest” at the top and “CRUMBLES” and “French Lentil + Leek” in bold directly below. All of the lot codes of this product are included in the recall, however, no other Daily Harvest products are included in the recall.

The products of concern were distributed between April 28 and June 17, 2022, to consumers in the U.S. through online and direct sales, retail stores, a Daily Harvest store in Chicago, Illinois, and a pop-up shop in Los Angeles, California.

Daily Harvest sent an email to all its subscribers alerting them of the contamination and directing them to throw away any of the remaining French Lentil + Leek Crumbles products that they might have, as well as offering them a $10 credit for every bag of French Lentil + Leek Crumbles purchased.

Numerous customers have complained through official reports, as well as on social media, of serious gastrointestinal reactions they experienced after having eaten Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. The customer’s symptom complaints range from serious stomach cramps to permanent liver and gallbladder damage. One consumer has claimed that the contaminated food led to the removal of their gallbladder, exorbitant hospital bills, and loss of work time and income. Some consumers went to the emergency room due to symptoms that point to liver dysfunction, such as high bilirubin—indicated by orange-yellowing of the skin— and an itching sensation. Daily harvest will likely be facing legal charges for negligence in the coming weeks.

To date, the cause of the food poisoning outbreak linked to Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles is yet to be determined. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in conjunction with Daily Harvest and other private laboratories, are currently investigating the outbreak. In response to the affected consumers’ demands for an explanation, Daily Harvest recently said in an online statement, that it will “share more information as soon as it’s available.”
