Matt Campbell’s team, already missing some key players, was forced to play ball this last Saturday without several additional players due to food poisoning. Before the game, he called in a “must win.” Iowa State’s Cyclones took the field against the Ohio Bobcats as the favorites to win the game, but that all was put in question as something the teammates ate on Friday evening brought about quick repercussions. Redshirt freshman quarterback Rocco Becht and junior wide receiver Jaylin Noel were among the sick players. Becht played, but never got going, including throwing one interception.
The game ended in a 10-7 loss to Ohio. The loss was controversial, given the questionable call of a “missed” field goal after Chase Contrarez kicked what appeared to be a solid 37 yard attempt. That would have leveled the score. In addition to the sick players, neither Jaylin Noel (a receiver) nor Gerry Vaughn (a linebacker) took the field during the game.
Nonetheless Iowa State now has a loss, and mystery. The source of the food borne illnesses has yet to be determined.
