Oregon is now at the center of an outbreak of salmonella linked to red onions. The first Red Onion salmonella lawsuit, naming Thomson International, Inc., is expected to be filed this week.
Oregon is currently suffering from a Salmonella outbreak produced by red onions from Thomson International Inc., a food producer from Bakersfield, California. At least 76 Oregon citizens have confirmed cases of Salmonella from Thomson International’s onions, though officials speculate there are more cases yet to be reported. These 76 cases have occurred in 13 Oregon counties, with 18 of the cases requiring hospitalizations, and zero deaths. Thomson International initiated a voluntary recall of red, yellow, and sweet onions, as well as any products containing onions, on July 31, 2020. Salmonellosis, the infection caused by Salmonella bacteria, symptoms begin 6 hours to 6 days after ingestion, and the infection lasts between 4 to 7 days. Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Public Health Division epidemiologists have confirmed the matching strains of Salmonella bacteria of Oregon citizens to the outbreak that has infected an estimated 400 people in the United States and some even in Canada. Dr. Emilio DeBess, D.V.M., an epidemiologist at the Oregon Public Health Division Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention Section, advises locals to contact their physician if they have experienced food poisoning symptoms, such as diarrhea, after eating red onions. Although antibiotics are typically not necessary for Salmonella infections, epidemiologists are working to trace all cases of Salmonella linked to the red onion outbreak.
