On April 2, 2024, Minnesota-based Abdallah Candies announced a recall of their Sea Salt Almond Alligators due to incorrect labeling.  The correct product is in the box but the ingredients label on the back is for Chocolate Covered Cherries.  Although in the product name, almonds are not listed in the ingredients.  Food Poisoning News recently reported on another ingredient panel mix-up.

Background

Abdallah Candies has not yet revealed how the labeling error was discovered.  However, those with almond allergies or sensitivities potentially face a serious risk.

Distribution

Abdallah reports that the affected product was distributed nationwide and sold in specialty retail stores, grocery stores, and other outlets.

Product Details

  • Product Name:  Sea Salt Almond Alligators
  • Packaging:  Paper-based rectangular box
  • Size:  8 ounces
  • Dates of Distribution:  March 1, 2024 to March 29, 2024
  • Other Identifying Characteristics:  0315 can be found at the bottom of the ingredients panel

What Consumers Should Do

  1. Check their home for the affected product
  2. If found, customers with almond allergies should not consume the product
  3. Return the affected product to the point of purchase
  4. If the product cannot be returned then discard the affected product immediately
  5. For additional questions or concerns, contact Abdallah Candies at 952-890-4770 or 800-348-7328 between Monday and Friday from 8am to 4:30pm Central Time.

The Risk

Fortunately, no illnesses or severe reactions have been reported at this time.  However, consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential exposure to the almond allergen and also monitor for any symptoms of allergic reactions.

In a recent article, Food Poisoning News reported on the top nine allergens and the extreme danger of exposure to tree nuts like almonds for those with allergies.  Symptoms can include itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing.  Anaphylaxis is a significant concern for those with tree nut allergies and so carrying an EpiPen is strongly advised.

Stay Informed

Undeclared allergens in food products is not a rare occurrence.  Commenting on this story, a nationwide food safety attorney had this to say:  “In just the last week we’ve seen a number of recalls due to undeclared allergens, including those from Lidl, Geisslers Supermarket, and Food Club.  It’s a reminder that transparency and accurate labeling are crucial to safety in the food industry.”

Consumers can stay abreast of food recalls by regularly checking sites like www.fda.gov or Food Poisoning News.
